£105,000 spend on footpaths

KIRKLEES Council will spend £105,000 clearing a backlog of applications for local footpaths to be recognised as public rights of way.

The money will be spent over the next three years to tackle the 95 applications.

Only 20 of those cases are under way, because of the complexity of some.

The extra money will pay for an additional map officer until 2011.

The idea for the extra cash was put forward by Kirklees Liberal Democrat Group.

Colne Valley Lib Dem councillor Nicola Turner said: “A well-established, maintained and protected public rights of way network will help to encourage more people to travel by foot, resulting in fewer cars on the road and less pollution.”
