‘Free swims could end in £800k black hole’

FREE swimming for the over 60s and under 16s is coming to Kirklees.

Kirklees Council cabinet agreed yesterday to accept the Government’s idea of free swimming – but warned it could leave them in a financial ‘black hole’ if more funding help is not provided.

The Government has set up a £140m national fund to support free swimming for the over 60s and under 16s, which will be split between local authorities in the UK between 2009 and 2011.

Kirklees Council will get £109,199 for 2009/10 to support free swimming for the over 60s.

They also expect to get £210,000 over the same period to cover the cost of free swimming for under 16s.
