Nearly 1,400 Kirklees homeless in three years

ALMOST 1,400 people became homeless in Kirklees over the past three years.

Council figures show that 1,395 people were accepted as being homeless from 2005 until early 2008.

And 429 young people aged up to 24 have been supported through housing difficulties in the past year.

At its height last October, housing officials took 150 homelessness applications and had a duty of care to 73 of the applicants.

Latest figures, for July 2008, show there were 107 acceptances, with the council having the responsibility to find housing for 66 of those.

Councillors are now looking at ways of preventing homelessness in Kirklees.
