Bar plan is 'threat to Castle Hill site'

Clr Smithson said English Heritage had not been consulted over the controversial use of Chinese granite to pave St George’s Square.

He did not want the group to be ignored on Castle Hill, which is in his ward.

“I certainly don’t want another St George’s Square fiasco on our hands.

“Castle Hill is arguably the most iconic and certainly the most historic site we have and whatever happens there must be right.

“If anything is eventually agreed it can only be a development that takes account of its surroundings and is sensitive to them and to the historical status of the site.”
