HIDING THE CIGGIES ‘NOT THE ANSWER’
A ban on cigarette displays in shops is one of the measures being considered by health minister Dawn Primarolo to cut the number of children smoking.
But Clr Sarwar said the real problem was adults buying cigarettes for under-18s.
He said: “I’ve never sold cigarettes to anyone under-age. Some of the teenagers round here hate me for that.
“But they wait outside the shop where I can’t see them and they ask adults to buy cigarettes for them. What can you do about it?”
More than 7,000 shopkeepers have sent postcards to the Government protesting against the proposal.
