Bad weather delays centre

BAD weather has delayed building work on a new community centre – but only by a month.

The centre on Briarlyn Road in Birchencliffe is replacing Birchencliffe Parish Hall which was destroyed by arsonists last March.

The £600,000 centre was due to be ready for Friday, October 3, when Huddersfield Video and Cine Club was due to show its film The Way We Were featuring Huddersfield from 1932 to 2007.

That event will still go ahead at 7.15pm on October 3, but at St Philip’s Church on Halifax Road, Birchencliffe, instead.

The centre is being built by Huddersfield contractors J Radcliffe and should now be ready for opening on the second weekend in November.

It will be almost the same size as the original which was built in 1970 and will include a stage and hall for 200 people with meeting rooms and better access to a kitchen area and toilets.
