VOTERS around Huddersfield intend to kick out their Labour MPs at the next election, a massive new poll shows.

The survey of 35,000 people nationwide predicts a massive Conservative landslide.

The poll indicates that five of the six Labour MPs around Huddersfield would be swept from office.

The survey, on the website PoliticsHome.com, predicts a Conservative majority of 146, with more than half of Labour MPs losing their seats.

Among the casualties would be Colne Valley MP Kali Mountford, Shahid Malik of Dewsbury, Wakefield MP Mary Creagh and Mike Wood of Batley and Spen.

The poll also suggests that Labour would lose Calder Valley, where sitting MP Chris McCafferty is stepping down at the next election.

The only local Labour MP who looks safe is Huddersfield’s Barry Sheerman.

But Conservative Colne Valley candidate Jason McCartney is not complacent about the poll result.

Yesterday he said: “Twelve months ago Labour was well ahead in the polls so I’m taking nothing for granted. I’m concentrating on working hard on the ground. I’ve been knocking on doors in Crosland Moor and Netherton this month.”

But Mr McCartney added he felt people in Colne Valley were ready for a change.

He said: “People are really unhappy with Labour and I hope I can offer them a change.”

Conservative candidate for Dewsbury Kevin Hollinrake was happy with the survey results.

He said: “I’m delighted to see that we’re doing so well, but it’s a long time until the next election and we’ve got to keep working.”

Mr Hollinrake is confident the Conservatives can win the next election.

He said: “Dewsbury has always been a target seat and I’ve always believed it was one we could win. Labour’s majority last time was only 4,500 and since then Kirkburton and Denby Dale – which both have a high number of Conservative voters – have been added to the constituency.”

But Terry McKay, who works for Dewsbury MP Shahid Malik, is not worried by the survey.

He said: “At the end of the day the only polls that matter are real ones. I’m sure that people in Dewsbury, Mirfield, Denby Dale and Kirkburton will realise that a hard-working MP who lives in the constituency, who is very much a part of the community, who delivers results and who has helped thousands of local people through casework is something worth holding on to.”

The Examiner contacted Labour in Colne Valley, Calder Valley, Batley and Spen and Wakefield yesterday. No comments were forthcoming from MPs or party workers in any of the constituencies.

The poll suggests Labour will be reduced to just 160 MPs – the lowest number for more than 70 years. Eight Cabinet ministers, including Home Secretary Jacqui Smith and Justice Secretary Jack Straw, could be among those to lose their seats.

Some 34,334 people in 238 marginal constituencies were interviewed for the poll between July 22 and September 19.
