Generous couple donate present money to charity

A COUPLE celebrating their golden wedding anniversary have raised hundreds of pounds for a children’s charity.

Dennis and Audrey Schofield from Meltham asked friends and family to donate to the West Yorkshire Forget Me Not Trust rather than give them gifts.

The couple presented more than £788 to the charity, which is raising money for a children’s hospice in Brackenhall.

Denis, 72, said: “We thought we would rather people give money to charity than get presents. Who needs nick-nacks when you’re our age?”

Around 80 friends and family joined the couple at Meltham Sports Club on August 2 to celebrate their 50th anniversary.

Dennis and Audrey met at Thongsbridge Drill Hall in 1955 and married at All Hallows Church in Almondbury three years later.

The couple have two children and three grand-children.

Dennis, a retired engineer who also served in the Royal Navy, said: “I think the success of a good marriage is a bit of give and take.”
