Meeting examines Queensgate proposals

DETAILS of the plans which could bring massive changes to Queensgate Market Hall were outlined last night.

Market tenants were joined by architects and members of the public at a meeting at the University of Huddersfield.

“Queensgate Revival – Threat or solution?” was hosted by the Market Hall Tenants’ Association and pressure group Huddersfield Gem.

Granville Pearson, who chairs the tenants’ group, said: “The current market hall needs development to keep it going as a modern shopping environment.

“We are concerned that what is being proposed is going to make matters worse.”

Kirklees Council wants to regenerate a large slice of Huddersfield, including the market hall, in a £200m project which could see traders moved to a smaller, first floor location.

Full details have not yet been produced.

The meeting was chaired by Examiner editor Roy Wright.
