THE Duke of Kent will officially open Huddersfield University’s £15m creative arts building tomorrow.

He will give the royal seal of approval to the ultra-modern building.

The Queen – the duke is her cousin – laid the foundation stone for the building in May last year.

The building is on the Queensgate campus off the ring road.

University vice-chancellor Prof Bob Cryan said: “This is a special day for the university.

“It provides a visual illustration of our commitment and ambition to develop as a centre of excellence and to attract students from all over the world, supported by cutting- edge facilities.”

The duke will tour the building before meeting students and unveiling a plaque.

He will see the eye-catching, cube-shaped acoustic lab, the first of its kind in England. It will allow musicians to experiment with different sounds.

The duke will also view the building’s environmentally friendly aspects, which include a roof tank to collect rain water as well as the six wind turbines and solar panels.

More than 600 students pass through its ultra-modern doors each day to reach the music and design departments.

It is the latest in the university’s £150m ‘new build’ programme, which has seen £80m spent already.
