Hall’s well for a timely party
ONE of Huddersfield’s Victorian halls has celebrated its 150th anniversary in fine style.
Longwood Mechanics is run by a committee from Longwood Village Group and the celebrations included a Black and White dinner-dance, an open evening and a children’s circus skills and face-painting day.
At the open evening at the hall a time capsule buried beneath the building was opened to mark the major milestone.
A builder found the capsule beneath the foundation stone during the recent £42,000 scheme to build a new stone and glass porch at the landmark hall on Longwood Gate.
It included a copy for the Holmfirth and Huddersfield Examiner from 1858, the satirical publication Punch, a copy of the London Evening Standard, a page from The Times and a bit of tobacco.
