Councillors snub army heroes parade

FEWER than one in 10 Kirklees councillors – and no Labour councillors at all – turned out for a march to honour Yorkshire soldiers.

Only six of the 69 councillors attended last Saturday’s Freedom Parade to commemorate The Yorkshire Regiment’s freedom of the borough which was awarded in 1952.

More than 100 soldiers were cheered on by hundreds of well-wishers as they paraded through Huddersfield town centre.

Despite a reminder email to all councillors following an announcement at full council in July, rows of chairs reserved for councillors remained embarrassingly empty.

And no Labour councillors turned up to support the armed forces despite their party’s policy of sending British troops to fight in Iraq and Afghanistan.
