Cabbie hurt in vicious attack

At this point his back was turned to the house and he was viciously attacked from behind. During the assault the top of his head was cut.

He noticed that the passenger had been wearing a sovereign ring on one of the middle fingers of his left hand.

The passenger is of mixed race, in his early to mid-20s and with an athletic build. He was wearing a blue shirt.

Mr Siddiq added: “This is the first time I have been attacked in 20 years. You get the odd person running off without paying; that happens around once a year.

“The vast majority of passengers are fine.”

Det Con Russ Conlon, from Kirklees CID intelligence unit, said: “This was a nasty, unprovoked attack on a taxi driver who provides a valuable service to the community.

“A man doing a job late at night to make sure people get home safely has been left seriously hurt for no reason.

“If anyone has any information at all to help this investigation I would urge them to come forward.”

Anyone with information should phone Det Con Rob Rutherford at Kirklees CID on 0845 6060606 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
