Council breaks recycling records
RECYCLING records have been broken by Kirklees Council, bosses claim.
The authority kept 86% of rubbish out of landfill in August and believes figures will show a rise to 90% for September.
It is believed to be one of the best records for recycling in the whole of the UK.
Clr David Hall, Cabinet member for transport and green services, said: “This is a fantastic achievement and demonstrates that Kirklees is leading the field at using alternative ways of getting rid of rubbish than dumping it. “I do not know of any other council in the country that can match our achievements in recent months.”
Most of the waste is turned into renewable energy or recycled.
The Hillhouse site – dominated by the giant incinerator chimney – includes a waste from energy plant, where rubbish is burned to produce electricity which powers thousands of homes in the area.
