Council breaks recycling records

Clr Hall added: “The Government expects waste to be diverted from landfill sites and we are meeting and exceeding that challenge.

“Landfill is an expensive way of getting rid of rubbish and indeed we face financial penalties – in effect fines – from Government and Europe if we don’t meet targets.”

He said the council was aiming for 100% recycling, but admitted that may be “too ambitious”.

Gary Mason, manager of the council’s waste management contractors SITA, said: “Residents are recycling more than ever and we recover energy from the waste leftover, which is great news for the environment.”
