Mr Stewart wrote to thousands of council workers on October 23.

He said new contracts would be offered from November 17 to make sure Kirklees met its Single Status requirements.

This is a national re-grading which aims to iron out differences between male and female pay rates in local government.

Mr Stewart said any employee who didn’t sign the new contract by March would be given 12 weeks’ notice of dismissal. Any worker who refuses to sign before the 12 weeks is up would be dismissed without redundancy payment.

Mr Stewart could not be reached for comment yesterday.
