More than 400 calls to fire service on bonfire night

But in most areas, thousands enjoyed Bonfire Night fun safely.

They included the hundreds who turned out for the Shepley Cricket Club bonfire, which drew large crowds to Marsh lane.

Inconsiderate parking by people at one bonfire event led to fire crews being delayed on their way to a job.

Firefighters from Brighouse had been called to assist three other fire engines with a fire at a derelict school at Moorfield Street in Savile Park, Halifax, at 7.40pm.

But people at a bonfire event had parked their cars on the A6025 Elland Road, causing traffic problems.

It took the Brighouse engine 30 minutes to get through, by which time another appliance had been called out.

One firefighter from Brighouse said: “They had to send for another engine instead of us. It could have been a house fire we were trying to get to. The consequences could have been serious.”
