Raise the lord! Harold's statue is on the move

Harold Wilson statue on the move

HUDDERSFIELD’S most famous son has a new home in St George’s Square.

A statue of former Prime Minister Harold Wilson has been moved to its new home in the square, which is undergoing a £4m revamp.

On Monday the 11-tone statue of the Huddersfield-born PM was tethered to straps and moved by lifting gear from its position in front of the railway station.

It was shifted several feet forward, towards John William Street.

A Kirklees Council spokeswoman said: “The move was part of the square’s multi-million-pound revival in which the statue still has centre stage.

“The highways engineer overseeing the project noted that great care was taken to ensure he was moved with befitting dignity.”
