Death of the local: Historic Marsden pub put on the market

A spokeswoman for Enterprise Inns said: “The pub is being sold on the open market and all serious offers will be considered.”

But it remains to be seen if a new landlord will come along and take over the lease or if the property will be sold de-licensed.

Mr Boothroyd added: “The historians of Marsden will know better than I that the Old New Inn is one of the oldest pubs in the village going back to coaching inn times.

“It is an amenity; a public place that gives meaning to the identity of Marsden as a village with a heart, not just a lot of private houses that provide the larger town centres around us with a workforce.”

According to the Marsden History Group the Old New Inn, Carrs Road, was built in 1780 during construction of the second turnpike road. Owen Bulmer, born 1831, was publican in 1891 having previously been landlord of The Shakespeare.
