Parking ban to free town centre streets
Nov 12 2008 by Andrew Hirst, Huddersfield Daily Examiner
A COUPLE of roads in the heart of Huddersfield town centre are to be closed to make life safer for late night revellers.
Police are concerned that part of Queen Street and Cross Church Street is become dangerously congested on Friday and Saturday nights.
Cars park on both sides of the road – including the cycle lane – and then people drive through and drop passengers off. This means the whole road gets clogged up.
This has led to ambulances sent to the King Street area being delayed on 999 calls.
From this Friday people are banned from parking on the small one-way stretch of Queen Street from the LBT to Kingsgate and on Cross Church Street from Kingsgate to Kirkgate.
The ban will be in force from 8pm to 4am the next morning and will be assessed after Christmas as to how successful it has been.
White Hackney Carriage taxis will be able to use the roads and park on their taxi ranks as normal.
