Nine fined £4,900 for garden eyesores

UNTIDY residents have been told to clean up their act or be fined.

Magistrates have ordered nine householders to pay almost £4,900 between them after failing to clear rubbish from their gardens.

Disused sofas, damp mattresses, broken electrical items and bags of household waste were littering the open gardens of nine Huddersfield homes.

After several warnings from Kirklees Council all residents failed to clean the waste away within 28 days.

So they were charged with failing to comply with a litter clearance notice served by the council.

Only one of the residents went to the hearings at Huddersfield Magistrates’ Court yesterday afternoon, although one other pleaded guilty by letter.

The rest of the accused were found guilty in their absence.
