Schools in the spotlight: Kirkburton C of E First School; Pictures and story

Achievement is high and the curriculum is enriched with themed weeks which have included Africa, science, music and art.

The school is also well ahead of national guidelines in teaching modern languages, with French being taught for the last two years to children throughout the school.

Sue McBurney uses fun techniques to help children enjoy language learning.

Fitness and exercise is also a strength. The school has achieved Kirklees gold and national healthy schools status and its popular walking bus includes about 20 children each day who walk a safe route to school following the development of a school travel plan.

This has included the construction of a wooden shelter in the playground for those walking each day.

Head teacher Jeff Trigg said: “We are a very friendly and welcoming school, just like one big family. Everyone knows everyone else here. We very much emphasise caring for each other.

“We are lucky enough to be situated in a beautiful setting surrounded by woodland. Our school is at the heart of the community and we have close links with the village, particularly as a church school with the local parish church.”
