Brighouse town hall given a six-month reprieve

A HISTORIC town hall has been saved from being sold off.

The future of Brighouse Town Hall looked uncertain after Calderdale Council’s Cabinet met to decide its fate.

But Brighouse councillors were able to get a reprieve, giving them six months to come up with an action plan.

Its future will be decided in six months’ time, giving Brighouse residents a chance to have their say on alternative uses for the 121-year-old building.

Brighouse councillor Colin Stout said: “There were three of us speaking at the meeting and I think we made the cabinet realise how important the hall is to the heritage of Brighouse.

“They gave us six months breathing space so we can ask the people of the town what they’d like to see it used for and at no cost to the council.

“We now need to make sure we consult as many people as possible, get ideas in and make it work.”
