Activity day for elderly

AN EVENT to encourage the elderly to become more active in their community is being held in Oakes.

Hundreds of older people and carers from across Kirklees are expected to attend the day of entertainment and information at Oakes Baptist Church next Thursday, November 27, 10am to 2pm.

Participants will be able to get advice on a range of topics, from pensions and benefits to home safety and security, and information from the many services and organisations that are working to help them.

They will be able to take free blood and diabetes tests.

There will also be entertainment from a choir and a host of activities and crafts for older people to take part in, including knitting and flower arranging.

Local schoolchildren will be working with participants and it is hoped that this will encourage older people to work with them or teach new skills in the community.
