THERE was scant reward for Works League teams who ventured into the FA Challenge Cup.

Both Sovereign Sports and Syngenta Sports were on the wrong end of heavy defeats in the area’s top cup contest.

Sovereign entertained District League side Grange Moor at Deighton but were unable to make the home advantage pay, and were beaten 4-0 with goals from Moran (3) and Keen.

Syngenta, meanwhile, came a real cropper at Meltham – home of the West Riding County Amateur side.

Harry Wood’s side were crushed 14-0, with Tom Mathews leading the rout with five goals. Other scorers were Robertson (3), Brammall (3), Newis (2) and Traynor.

There were also goals galore for leaders Moldgreen in the league, as they hammered Netherton 9-0 to open up a three-point lead over Bay Athletic.

It was Moldgreen’s eighth win out of 10 games. Their goals came from Beaumont (3), Kidger, Short, Smith, McDonagh, Boothroyd and Augustine.

Lindley Lib moved joint top of Division II with an excellent win over Uppermill Reserves – their seventh win of the campaign.

The scorers for Lindley were Flooks (3), McLean (2), Maynard, Barkham and Burns.

A super second-half hat-trick by young striker Thomas Oakes gave Berry Brow a 3-2 win at Lepton, after the home side had gone into a 2-0 interval lead through Lomax and Haigh.
