Newsagent demands action after latest raid

At that time a Kirklees Highways spokesman said: “The reaction by the residents regarding street lighting and CCTV is understandable and we will be investigating the reported crime statistics for this area.”

In 2003 Mr Joshi threw a gauntlet down to Kirklees officials to make the Swan Lane area safer, with improved lighting and setting up CCTV cameras.

At the time Kirklees’s Community Safety Unit manager Simon Massey said: “We have a small retailers’ fund which helps to improve security for small businesses.

“We will certainly go to Mr Joshi, talk about his concerns and see if there is anything we can do to help him.’’ But Mr Joshi said no-one has ever been to see him and no improvement work has been done.

No-one was available to comment from Kirklees after the most recent raid.
