A fire brigade spokesman said West Yorkshire normally has just over 200 car fires a month and about a dozen of those are in Huddersfield.
“The figures have remained fairly static in recent times,’’ he added.
In a typical year there are around 100,000 car fires in the UK.
Huddersfield fire station manager Paul Taylor said fires can quickly engulf cars and he urged people to keep well clear of burning cars and dial 999.
Tyres can explode in the searing heat and debris can be flung out. Hydraulic springs in hatchbacks can also explode, sending the rods shooting out.
Station Manager Taylor said: “We need clear instructions where the fire is and it’s always best if people are waiting to guide us immediately to the fire.
“If a burning car is near to a building there is always the danger the fire could spread to the premises.”
