Royal visitor to region

A ROYAL visitor officially opened a new-look patients’ unit at Overgate Hospice in Elland.

The in-patient unit has recently undergone a total refurbishment after receiving several grants, including one from the Healthcare Commission.

The Duke of Gloucester, who was touring the Huddersfield area, officially commemorated the completed work by unveiling a plaque.

During his visit he also went to the day hospice, where patients presented him with a felt cap they had made especially for him.

On his tour of the hospice the duke also enjoyed a performance by Halifax Young Singers, followed by a lunch with staff and supporters of the hospice. They included a group of 27 who had just returned from a 10-day fundraising trek around Nepal. The group raised more than £32,000, which will be used to help boost support the day-to-day running of the hospice.

Earlier the duke visited an Almondbury school to celebrate a royal anniversary.
