Council staff based at the site will be moved to nearby temporary accommodation while further work takes place.
Other improvements will include a workshop for 11 refuse vehicles and office space.
The contractors say the new facility will have environmentally friendly features.
These will include a rainwater ‘harvest’ device, roof-mounted cells to generate electricity and a solar hot water system.
Clr David Hall, Kirklees Cabinet’s member for environment and transport matters, said: “I am delighted to be able to move this project forward and to develop a new depot designed around 21st-century principles. “The facility will operate to the highest environmental and customer services standards.”
Craig Tatton, managing director of ISG’s regional business, said: “ISG was successful in securing the project by demonstrating its strong credentials in the delivery of complex and multi-phased projects, carried out across busy live environments.
“As a business we have also forged strong working relationships with Kirklees Council over many years, proving a trusted and highly experienced construction partner.”
