Plan for safer gravestones

NEW procedures are being brought in to speed up checks on unsafe headstones in Kirklees cemeteries.

The Cabinet approved a new policy yesterday to change the way headstones are examined in the 13 graveyards in the district.

Previously, the council wrote to the people responsible for all gravestones before work was done to make any safe.

This was time-consuming, especially as owners sometimes had to be traced.

Now, the council has decided it is not always necessary to notify memorial owners before work is carried out.
