Car turned maternity ward as baby born in layby

THE family car became a makeshift maternity ward when little Kenzie McSheffrey made his sudden entrance into the world.

And his grandma and dad had to play the role of midwives when the bouncing boy arrived in a rush.

The tot was born at the side of the road in freezing conditions as the family made a middle-of-the-night mad dash from their Highburton home to Barnsley Hospital.

Grandma Bev McGuire, who was due to be her daughter Fiona’s birthing partner on the big day, said: “I was expecting to be holding Fiona’s hand as she gave birth – not my grandson’s head as he came out!”

Fiona, 25, and husband Patrick, 42, had their other son and two daughters at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary.

But their youngest daughter, Keady, now two, came down with hypothermia after she was born.
