He has since had surgery at St James’s Hospital in Leeds to remove a growth in his left lung and is now recovering with physiotherapy.
“It was a total surprise,” he said. “I have diabetes, but I’m not ill with it and it was my yearly routine check when Sheila checked my lungs because of a cough I had.
“I smoke so I thought nothing of it, but she referred me to the hospital and they found the cancer.
“Nicky pushed me to go. I was scared, but once I was in their hands they were brilliant and so was my GP, Dr Abdul Hamid, who set everything going. The specialists at the hospital said he was right on the ball.”
