NETHERTON teenager Thomas Farrar mixed with royalty when he picked up a top award.
The student was presented with the gold Duke of Edinburgh award by the Duke himself at a ceremony at St James’ Palace in London.
To attain the gold award, the 18-year-old had to complete a series of tough challenges within the community.
Thomas said: “I’m really pleased to get the gold award.
“It has been a real challenge but I’ve enjoyed it and got a lot out of it.
“It is the ultimate challenge you can get and I’ve met lots of other people doing it which has been great.
“The best thing was meeting the Duke of Edinburgh, I’ve never met a royal before so that was exciting.”
Thomas is a first year student at Newcastle University studying biomedical sciences. He was a pupil at Greenhead College and Huddersfield Grammar School.
