£10,000 collected in memory of Chelsea North

TEAMS of men dressed as women raised £10,000 in memory of schoolgirl Chelsea North at a charity six-a-side tournament.

Men young and old donned school uniforms, nuns’ habits and other dresses to raise cash for Martin House Children’s Hospice at Boston Spa, near Wetherby, and the Teenage Cancer Unit at St James’s Hospital, Leeds.

Chelsea, 14, of Newsome, died last month from bone cancer after being diagnosed with the disease in July.

Dad Leigh Binney, wife Claire, and sisters Eleanor and Anna helped organised the light-hearted competition at Sports City, Waterloo, yesterday.

Through sponsorship, 5,000 raffle ticket sales, collections and online donations, the appeal managed to raise a five-figure sum. A posting on the Liverpool FC fans forum about the appeal also prompted donations from people in Dubai, Malta and other countries.

Chelsea was a supporter of the club, as is her dad Leigh.
