Festive crackdown on drink-drivers

THE police clampdown on drivers who booze or take drugs before getting behind the wheel started in Huddersfield – with 200 people breath-tested between 7am and 9am.

One man on his way to work was arrested on suspicion of drink-driving and was taken to Dewsbury police station.

His two passengers then had to make their own way to work.

Officers stopped drivers on Leeds Road close to the giant Syngenta works looking for those over the limit after heavy drinking sessions last night.

They are also eager to catch motorists high on drugs.

The annual campaign is forcewide and will run until the new year.

As part of this year’s blitz, police will be carrying out a number of high-profile roadside checks on motorists.

The checks will take place both mornings and evenings throughout December at a number of locations across the region.
