12,000 off school as snow falls

12000 OFF!
OVER 12,000 Kirklees children got an extra day off today as schools shut because of a severe weather warning.
But Huddersfield escaped the worst of the promised Arctic blast, although there was snow on higher ground, and people made their journeys into work without problems.
Huddersfield New College made the decision yesterday not to open today, as weather forecasters predicted several inches of snow, while others closed today.
This morning, however, brought mainly sleet and rain, with roads kept open by a full-scale gritting operation by Kirklees Council.
Crews were on the roads before 5am and there were no problems reported on local roads.
More than 150 schools across West Yorkshire chose to shut today.
