Call to church-goers to become town’s angels
Dec 4 2008 by Emma Davison, Huddersfield Daily Examiner
STREET angels who work to keep people in Huddersfield town centre at night safe are appealing for new recruits.
In the 18 months since the Christian-led initiative was launched, volunteers have clocked up more than 2,000 hours and helped reduce violence and alcohol-related crime in the town.
Now they are looking for more people to join their 40-strong team.
The volunteers walk around the town centre on Friday and Saturday nights, casting a protective eye on the town’s revellers.
Dressed in high visibility jackets, they keep in contact with door staff, nightclub owners, the police and fast food van owners. They also run a late-night café.
As well as keeping people safe, the team support people who are disorientated or have become separated from friends.
