Knife scanner at Kirklees College
A STUDENT brandished a meat cleaver during an initiative to show knife crime is not a problem in Huddersfield.
But there was no need for alarm – the teenager needed it for catering classes.
Other than permitted kitchen utensils, no-one was caught carrying weapons during the exercise at Kirklees College’s Huddersfield campus.
Police were on site with metal detecting knife arches and hand-held detectors in the first initiative of its kind in Kirklees.
More than 2,000 students and staff passed through the arches on their way into college yesterday.
Officers searched about 650 people by hand.
There was also a police sniffer dog which detected drug contamination on 12 people.
