Blind support group call for answers as funding is pulled

VISUALLY impaired people have demanded answers from Kirklees Council over the future of vital support services.
The Society for the Blind of Dewsbury, Batley and District currently provides social services support for people who have just been diagnosed with sight problems in north Kirklees.
But Kirklees Council has decided to withdraw the social services contract from the group from March 31 next year.
They have not yet been told whether they can re-tender for the contract or whether services will be provided in-house by the council instead.
This has left the group’s 1,000 members worried about whether they will continue to receive the help they need to live independently. They also fear funding will be cut.
The society carries out an initial assessment of needs, secure special equipment and also provides activities and social events for the group’s members.
