Children receive courage awards
YOUNGSTERS from around Kirklees have been honoured with courage awards by the Mayor.
Six young people were given Kirklees Children of Courage Awards and three of them were able to receive the honours at a tea party in the Mayor’s Parlour at Huddersfield Town Hall.
Mayor of Kirklees, Clr Karam Hussain, presented awards to Gemma Mallalieu, Hafsah Farooq and Sam Edwards.
Gemma, 15, from Primrose Hill, was nominated by staff at Newsome Next Generation, a programme of healthy living activities to improve people’s well being in the Newsome area.
Despite having learning difficulties, Gemma has volunteered at the project since going there on a school placement.
She also helps young pupils with learning difficulties and disabilities at Castle Hill School.
Sam, 13, from Newsome, was nominated by his mum Emma because of the way he has supported younger sister Sophie, seven, following her diagnosis with leukaemia in February last year.
