Police later arrested its driver, the 17-year-old from Huddersfield, on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
The road was re-opened at about 4.30am on Tuesday morning.
A police spokesman said: “The driver of the Golf, which was travelling south in the same direction as the Citroen, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
“Part of the investigation into the cause of the collision will involve establishing the speed and circumstances of the Saxo and the Golf.
“We believe a vehicle travelling north on Canwick Road was nearly hit by one of the vehicles involved in the collision.”
Police have appealed for that motorist and a bus driver to contact them urgently because they may have vital information.
