FIREFIGHTERS were faced with a cliche rescue job at Christmas; a cat stuck up a tree. Curiosity was in danger of killing six-month-old Poppy when she climbed 40ft up the tree in the garden of a house on Yew Tree Road in Birchencliffe. Firefighters were called at 2.45pm on Christmas Eve day when seven hours of attempts to lure her down had failed. In the end if was the ‘gentle persuasion’ of water, with firefighters shooting a fine spray at the branches above her, which forced her down. Firefighter Karl Helme, from Elland fire station, said: “It seemed her hatred of water was greater than her fear of heights.’’ Read
