A SALVATION Army couple who organise a Christmas Day party for lonely people have been warmly praised for their kind-hearted dedication.

Major Ernie Huby and his wife June organise the event every year.

Seventy people who would otherwise be alone at Christmas attended the party at Gledholt Methodist Church.

One of the party-goers, 60-year-old Geoff Wood, from Lindley, said: “If I wasn’t here I’d be at home alone and miserable. They are so dedicated and I admire them so much.

“The Salvation Army has one heck of a social conscience. There’s so much involved in organising this and everyone is so grateful for all the hard work they do.”

The event also relies on a 30-strong team of volunteers who give their Christmas Day up to transport people to the party and also help to prepare the food. Many are Rotarians.

The event began with a full Christmas dinner followed by entertainment including a quiz and karaoke led by the Ernie and June’s daughter, Sarah.

Salvation Army member Julie Woodhead gave two monologues – about the wood for Noah’s Ark and the shepherds’ role in the nativity.

After the Queen’s Speech there was a carol service followed by a Christmas tea.

Ernie said: “We couldn’t do it without all the wonderful help we get from the volunteers. We make a full day of it and try to give everyone who attends a Christmas to remember.”

“The majority of people here are all single and would otherwise be sat at home by themselves. It’s been a brilliant event this year funded by donations we collect throughout the year.”
