Houdini, the dog that escaped death!

She said: “Someone had seen the dog, huddled and shivering at the side of the beck.

“It was heartening to see a group of children gathered round, trying to help the poor pooch. A man had waded in to get her out and give her some biscuits.”

Ms Walsh phoned dog wardens, who took the terrified animal to Springboard Boarding Kennels in Ossett, where she will remain for the next week.

Dog warden David Salisbury said he had heard that a man had been standing for a while at a nearby bridge before throwing the suitcase into the water.

Luckily it was only shallow water where the suitcase was thrown in and the dog scramble free.

Kennelmaid Kim McUtcheon said: “She was wet through and had a limp. She’s a little sweetheart, but distraught.

“We hope she will be able to be re-homed, but if not she will go to a rescue centre.”
