Finally...safety barriers for M62
Jan 5 2009 by Neil Atkinson, Huddersfield Daily Examiner
DRIVERS are finally to benefit from M62 safety fencing.
The Highways Agency confirmed today they will begin work on installing vital barriers along a three-mile stretch of the busy trans-Pennine motorway.
The announcement comes 12 years after The Examiner campaigned for the barriers after a spate of terrible accidents.
Agency officials promised last year that new barriers would be installed and confirmed today work will start on Thursday.
It will mean new barriers around some of the lamp-posts standing on the M62 verges between Junction 22 (Rishworth Moor) and Junction 23 (Outlane).
Further work will be carried out to replace some existing barriers on the same stretch.
A Highways Agency spokesman said: “The existing safety fence along the eastbound verge and part of the westbound verge will be replaced, and new fencing installed on some sections where there currently is none.
