Appeal won for Kirkburton Tesco with 9 parking places

VILLAGERS have spoken of their horror as a Tesco store in Kirkburton gained approval despite opposition.

The supermarket giant has been given the all-clear to build a Tesco Express convenience store at the former Jet petrol station site on North Road after it won a government planning appeal.

The controversial application was thrown out last June when Tesco was caught in a no-win parking stalemate.

Kirklees councillors rejected the plan because of a lack of parking but when Tesco offered to buy and re-surface an extra parking zone behind the site, highways officials said it would create too much traffic.

But planning inspector, Michael Moffoot, gave Tesco the green light saying he had seen no convincing evidence the store would significantly add to the congestion on North Road.

Only nine spaces are planned for the two-storey building after the inspector ruled out the need for extra parking.

Five trees are set to be felled before work begins and Tesco will also be barred from using full size HGVs (longer than 12.6m) or making deliveries after 11pm or before 7am.
