Top-level panel set up to avert Baby P tragedy

It emerged last month that Baby P, who lived in Haringey in London, had been on the child protection register for eight months before his death. Over this period social workers, doctors and police made 60 visits to the toddler and his family, but missed the chance to save his life by taking him into care.

Kirklees Cabinet member for children Clr Jim Dodds set up the panel to stop any similar tragedy happening here.

He said: “I’m keen that we as a professional and caring council have an independent review. I’m confident that our present arrangements are good but, having said that, it’s my duty to keep them under scrutiny. It’s essential we do all we can to ensure the safety of very vulnerable children in Kirklees.”

Clr Dodds announced yesterday that the panel will be chaired by Martin Manby, director of the National Children’s Research Centre, based on New North Parade

The panel will also include Clr Dodds, Lib Dem Clr Margaret Fearnley and Labour councillor Cath Harris. It is expected to report by this summer.
