Police checks find one in ten doors unlocked

“All the occupants we spoke to who had left their properties unsecured were very positive about the work we were doing to prevent sneak-in burglaries.

“We are not trying to make anyone look a fool, but simply working in the best interests of residents.

“Next time it might not be a Neighbourhood Policing Team officer who checks your door, so please heed the warnings.

“Always remember to lock up and help yourself to avoid the heartache of finding your property has been stolen.”

Insp Trueman added: “To reinforce the message about home security Neighbourhood Policing Team officers handed out more than 600 leaflets offering crime prevention advice and provided residents with about 300 energy- saving light bulbs.

“These allow people to leave a light on when they are out as a deterrent to burglars.”
