MP helps woodland through recycling scheme

MP Mary Creagh is urging people to take part in a recycling scheme for old Christmas cards.

The MP, whose Wakefield constituency includes Denby Dale and Kirkburton, helped launch the Woodland Trust’s annual card recycling scheme at TK Maxx in Wakefield.

Through the scheme, people can take their Christmas cards to recycling bins at TK Maxx, Marks and Spencer and WH Smith.

Last year, the scheme resulted in 73.6m cards being recycled and enabled the Woodland Trust to plant 17,000 more trees.

Woods that benefited included Wither Wood, near Denby Dale and Lower Hartley Bank Wood, near Kirkburton.

Mrs Creagh said: “I send and receive hundreds of Christmas cards every year. It’s good to know that by recycling them, I can give something back to the environment.

“If everyone recycles just one Christmas card this year, it will raise enough funds to plant a further 15,000 trees.”
