But a pathologist ruled out drowning as a cause of death, the court heard.
In police interviews the defendants blamed each other.
The court heard Navsarka had appeared to cope with Sanam until the early part of 2008.
Mr Goose said: “She was able to walk, talk and to play with other children. She attended a nursery or creche facility arranged by the council. To all those who observed Saman she appeared to be a happy and normal child.”
The court heard that Anwar had left an arranged marriage to live with Navsarka at her home in Soothill, Batley, in about February last year.
The pair moved to Riddings Road, intending to marry.
Mr Goose said: “It was in that home that the real violence towards Saman began, if not earlier.”
Navsarka, wearing a dark suit and white shirt with her long, dark hair worn loose, showed no emotion as she listened from the dock.
A security guard sat between her and bearded Anwar, who wore a dark suit, white shirt and blue tie.
